What in the Gillian’s-Island-Lord-of-the-Flies fresh hell is this? Yuck. There was such a missed opportunity…this could have been so much better: big storm, pirates, shipwreck, wealthy idiots…but this still came off boring and gross (who doesn’t love a puking montage? Uh, turns out…me). even Woody Harrelson couldn’t save this one. 5 watch checks, Ryan likely would have stayed awake, but to complain the whole time. Maybe the big screen would have made it better? But doubtful.

Women Talking
A sad story that comes off emotionally beautiful, mainly due to the strong collective performance by these women. I suppose the title gives away the premise of this movie. Yep. That’s pretty much it, women talking. This movie was a book originally and it very much feels like you needed to have read the book to get the full picture here, and that’s a movie fail -in my opinion. I’m shocked that not one of these women received an Oscar nomination. Many of them could have, should have. 3 watch checks, Ryan was already sleeping at the title and you can rent this one. It’s up for best picture and I’m not sure why.
The Fablemans
I’m behind on my posts, so this will be quick. This movie was throughly enjoyable. It was long but kept me interested & the time passed quick, which I always think is a sign of a good movie. The only thing that was annoying was Michelle Williams’ portrayal of the mom, it felt like a bad Judy-Garland-with-a-terrible-bob characterization. I suppose that could be how a boy remembers his odd mother? It was a nice story of a fairly normal family. And Ryan stayed awake for it! (That’s says a lot!) 1 watch check. Rentable. I’d like to see this win best picture, but I’m not putting money on it.
A Man Called Otto
A grumpy, elderly man who is shown that life is worth living and caring about people is valuable- who wouldn’t love that story? This movie keeps pretty true to the book and Tom Hanks is, of course, brilliant. It will make you smile and get you in the feels…life is tough after all, but also so wonderful. 1 watch check, Ryan would likely fall asleep and you can rent this one but the whole family will enjoy it.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Stunning world…but I felt like I was inside a video game. It’s an epic journey and there were moments of true drama but I wish they had reminded us more about the first movie- there was some holes for me. It’s an amazing world but it just still felt too fake or maybe recycled, like I was watching an animated Star Wars maybe? I can’t quite put my finger on it. Time did fly by though, it’s true visual entertainment. 1 watch check (ok actually 2 but in a 3 hour movie, that feels like an unfair rating). Ryan would stay awake for this one and you should definitely see it on the big screen!
The Whale
Oy. This one is a heavy one…(no pun intended) but oh so beautifully real. Brendan Fraser is an absolute marvel and should get an Oscar nomination if not the prize. His courage to “go there” with this role is inspiring, a standing ovation is in order. It’s a hard movie to watch but it’s absolutely worth watching. The look into such a raw, painful story is unique: a man desperately trying to repair his relationship with his daughter. I believe movies like this create an empathy in us that’s invaluable. No watch checks, I think Ryan would stay awake for this (it’s hard to look away), it’s not necessary to see it on the big screen, you can rent it.
Spirited
I was a little weary on this- a Christmas musical? It was so great. Think La La Land meets A Christmas Carol. It’s not for everyone, but I bet just about everyone can find something they like in this hilarious movie. Will Ferrell & Ryan Reynolds are outstanding, bravo boys! 1 watch check, Ryan did fall asleep pretty quick and totally fine at home (uh you have too). I bet it will get your toe tappin’!
Bullet Train
Watching Brad Pitt fight has been a joy since Fight Club and it’s still fun. This one isn’t a deep, just a bunch of fighting but also some funny lines, clever twists and cameos. If you enjoyed Deadpool or Kill Bill, you’ll like this one. Ryan would for sure stay awake, the bigger the screen, the better and only 1 watch check. One word of caution- it’s a bit bloody.
See How They Run
A classic who done it. Great acting, stellar cast, fun story…But…I got a little bored. There was a good twist but somehow it still felt predictable. A good movie for the whole family. This one can be rented and Ryan would not have stayed awake. 3 watch checks.
Where The Crawdads Sing
A sweet movie about the resilience of a young girl who’s been abandoned. It’s actually a love story. I thought it was a pretty decent adaptation of the book. You don’t need to see it on the big screen and Ryan never would have stayed awake for this one. It’s definitely a chick flick but worth watching. 2 watch checks.
